#Awwbode: Deck Makeover Reveal

Here it is, just in time for the beginning of summer: our DECK REVEAL! If you have been following along on our stories, then you know we have been slowly doing a makeover on our deck and preparing it for summer enjoyment. One of the major bonuses of moving from NYC to Austin was the chance to have a home with an outdoor space of our own. Our backyard has a huge deck that pretty much wraps around the whole house, so we wanted to give it a little sprucing up for the time being since we’ve been spending so much time here. When we started looking at inspiration for how we wanted to decorate our deck, we decided to stick to our love of Mid Century, and try to design our space so that it resembled an outdoor space you would find at a Palm Springs hotel! We partnered with one of our favorite home decor stores, At Home, to provide us with the furniture and decor to bring our vision to life. Almost everything pictured was DIYed to some extent, and I’ll be talking about all of that below and what we modified/made ourselves! Let’s jump in!!

The photo above is the before! I forgot to take a photo prior to Kyle painting, so the pergola is half painted already haha, but you get the idea! I knew that I wanted to do something with the color of the pergola, so we went with a cream color slightly lighter than the deck floor color to create some contrast. I think down the line we’ll eventually get someone to repaint/stain the whole deck, but for now, just painting this one structure made a huge difference!

This breeze block inspired screen was one of the first projects I had planned for the deck. I’ve always wanted real breeze block, but there’s not really a practical place for it to go on our deck, so I got these plywood pieces laser cut to break up the space. A lottt of math went into figuring out how to get this to fit perfectly haha!

I’ll be doing a more detailed tutorial sometime soon on how to make the screen, but I wanted to talk a little bit here about how I assembled everything! After painting each of the pieces with outdoor paint, I made a template to drill the holes in all four corners. I ran into some issues with the hardware I was using, but figured out that I could use binder clips to securely hold everything together and still allow for some movement. This ended up being one of my favorite parts, and it really transformed the whole space. Plus, it has been through three big rainstorms already and it’s still looking perfect!

If you followed along on stories, I posted a few times about the designs for these shades and I am so happy with how they came out! I shortened some already made sun shades to fit our pergola, and they’re easily removable via carabiners for cleaning or when it’s supposed to rain.

I fell in love with this chair and loveseat from At Home, but the color palette we were going for was white, coral, and green. We decided to spray paint the metal frames white, and I reupholstered the cushions to give them a brighter look! Since our deck is surrounded by so many gorgeous trees, we added in a mixture of fake and real plants to the deck to really fit that tropical oasis feeling. The faux plants we picked up from At Home are so good too (here and here), I can barely tell the difference between the real and fake ones!

Can’t wait until the day we can have friends over again for some outdoor dinner parties! Hope you all liked seeing this transformation, we had a lot of fun creating this space, and it’s quickly become our favorite place to hang out and eat meals together. All of the sources are listed below if there’s anything you’re looking for for your own outdoor spaces!
