DIY Pop Rocks Candy Recipe

Pop it like it’s hot, pop it like it’s hot! Alright, now that all of that is out of my system, let’s get down to business and talk about DIY POP ROCKS! After I found out that the combination of citric acid and baking soda leads to a popping sensation, I knew I had to recreate one of my favorite candies and obviously show all of you how to do it too. Raise your hand if you were totally fascinated by pop rocks as a kid. The fascination was a lot of why they were one of my favorite candies, but they were also really good too. Shout out to the cotton candy flavor!! With this recipe you can create any flavor and color you want, so let’s get poppin’!

1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup citric acid (here)
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon of peppermint extract
Gel food coloring
Powdered sugar
Candy thermometer
Hammer

1. Lightly dust a baking sheet with the powdered sugar.

2. In a saucepan, combine the corn syrup, sugar, and water on medium heat. Using the candy thermometer, measure the temperature.

3. When the mixture reaches 300 degrees Fahrenheit, remove from heat and add the baking soda, citric acid, extract, and food coloring. Stir quickly to combine as the candy will start to set.

4. Pour the mixture over the baking sheet and hit the table next to the baking sheet to remove all of the bubbles. Allow to cool for 30 minutes before breaking into pieces.

5. Break up the pop rock candy and place it into a ziploc bag. Using a hammer, smash it into small pieces to resemble actual pop rocks.

Pop rocks are by far one of the most fun candies to eat and now, make! And if you have any kind of flavoring, the possibilities are endless. You could use vanilla extract to make vanilla pop rocks, or cotton candy extract for a cotton candy flavoring!
